Amid the chaos of that day, when all I could hear was the thunder of gunshots, and all I could smell was the violence in the air, I look back and am amazed that my thoughts were so clear and true, that three words went through my mind endlessly, repeating themselves like a broken record: you're so cool, you're so cool, you're so cool.
Dad loved the movie, "True Romance". When someone would come to visit, he make them sit on the couch and he'd play scenes from the movie: Gary Oldman as the weird Rasta pimp, Christopher Walken as the mob boss, Dennis Hopper going for broke. What Dad especially loved was the opening theme music. In the days before Youtube, he recorded the music directly off the video cassette onto his tape player. He'd put it on and get all excited: "Listen to the drums."
But there's more. After Dad died, I was talking to Marni about the music and how it sounded like Carl Orff. Marn told me that Hans Zimmer wrote it as a kind of tribute to Orff's "Musica Poetica" (used in the movie "Badlands"). It occurred to me then that Dad must have known that. I am reminded of this because in my post on Mahler, Marni knew which version Dad liked best, and she added to that story. It's good to remember together.
